In 2012 Applause Outdoors 212 placed contemporary outdoor performances in community events in Kent and East Sussex – including village fetes, festivals and celebrations related to the London 2012 Games Torch journey. It is a joint project from Applause Rural Touring and PANeK (Performing Arts Network Kent). There will not be an Applause Outdoors programme in 2013, we plan to deliver it again in 2014.
In 2012 Applause and PANeK gave six Kent-based theatre companies development awards to build interactive, street-style performances suitable for any outdoor event and for all ages:
Accidental Collective: EveryONE’s looking for someONE; Dizzy O’Dare presents… The Last Apothecary; The Galloping Cuckoos: Driftwood; The Honk Project: Trundlehonk!; Little Cauliflower: The Machine; What’s Coming Out of the Box?: Spread the Love.
We commissioned a brand new piece of roaming theatre – Puppit + Digit especially to accompany London 2012 Games Torch journey celebrations throughout Kent and East Sussex.
This map shows the scale and reach of Applause Outdoors 212 across the two counties:
With support from Kent County Council, Arts Council England and East Sussex Arts Partnership, Applause Outdoors 212 was able to offer performances to village fetes for free and to festivals at a subsidised rate, so that everyone can experience great outdoor arts in their community.
Applause Rural Touring provides professional, challenging, affordable and inspiring artistic performances in rural and community venues. We work with over 100 voluntary promoting groups throughout Kent and East Sussex. During 2010 – 2011 we supported 98 events in village halls, community centres and at fetes and festivals. We estimate that during the year over 14,000 people will have experienced an Applause performance.
PANeK (Performing Arts Network Kent) supports the making and presenting of new theatre by:
• partnering with theatre-makers to produce innovative work.
• working with venues and funders to find the best ways of reaching the widest audiences.
• providing a central resource of information, advice and mentoring related to theatre-making in Kent
